FAQ

Answers to the questions we are asked most about Dyson hair dryers, the Airstrait™ straightener, the Airwrap™ multi-styler and the attachments that go with them. If your question is about an order rather than a product, the Shipping & Delivery and Refund & Returns pages cover the policy in full.

Choosing the right tool

Which Dyson hair dryer should I buy — HD07, HD16, HD17 or HD18?

They are the same idea at four different points in its development, so the right answer depends on how much you want to spend and what you do with your hair.

  • HD07 — the original Supersonic™. 1,600W, 13.3 l/s of airflow, 8.6 ft cable, 1.8 lb. The widest airflow of the four, the longest track record, and three attachments in the box. Still the reference point everything else is measured against.
  • HD16 — Supersonic Nural™. Adds scalp protection and attachment memory to the Supersonic formula, so the dryer remembers the setting that belongs to each head.
  • HD17 — Supersonic r™. 1,700W, 12.5 l/s, 0.86 kg, and a body that is 30% smaller and 20% lighter than the original. Five intelligent attachments. The one to choose if arm fatigue is the thing that stops you finishing a blow-dry.
  • HD18 — Supersonic r™ Professional. The HD17 rebuilt for salon use: 12.5 ft cord, a spare inner filter, 325 g body, two-year warranty.

If you dry your own hair a few times a week, the HD07 or HD16 is plenty. If you dry hair all day — or you have long, thick hair and your arm gives out before your hair dries — the HD17 is worth the extra. Salons should go straight to the HD18.

Hair dryer or straightener — do I need both?

Not necessarily. A dryer with a smoothing nozzle rough-dries and then finishes a section, which gives you a soft, straight blow-out — but it will not produce the flat, sharp result of a straightener, and it takes more skill and more time to get close.

A straightener gives you that flat finish and can also curl, but on its own it cannot get wet hair dry, and a flat iron applied to damp hair is the fastest way to damage it.

The in-between option is the Dyson Airstrait™ HT01. It dries and straightens in one pass with heated air instead of plates, so it replaces the dryer-then-iron routine for anyone whose goal is straight hair. If you want volume, curls and waves as well, look at the Airwrap™ instead.

What is the difference between the Airstrait™ and a normal flat iron?

A flat iron clamps the hair between two heated plates and drags them down the length. The Airstrait does not touch the hair with a hot surface at all. It projects heated air downward at a 45° angle through the section, and the pressure of that air — up to 3.6 kPa — is what aligns the hair as it dries.

In practice that changes three things:

  • You start from wet hair. The HT01 is built for wet-to-dry styling, so you no longer have to blow-dry first and then straighten. Dyson puts the saving at up to 8 minutes per session.
  • There is no clamping force. That is where most straightener breakage starts, especially on fine or fragile hair.
  • It is gentler on curls. It smooths and aligns rather than crushing the pattern flat, which is why the diffuser and wide-tooth comb matter to curly hair.

The trade-off is that it will not give you the glass-flat, pin-straight finish some people want, and it cannot be used on hair that is already dry at a high heat setting indefinitely — Dyson's no-heat-damage claim applies specifically to wet-to-dry use.

Using your hair dryer

Which heat and speed setting should I be using?

Think of it as three stages rather than one setting. All the dryers in the range give you four heat settings including a cold shot, and three speeds.

  • Rough dry — high heat, high speed. Remove the bulk of the water, working from the roots down and moving constantly. Do not stop in one place.
  • Shape — medium heat, medium speed. This is the stage that decides how the finished style looks. Work section by section with a brush and keep the air pointing down the hair shaft.
  • Set — cold shot. A blast of unheated air closes the cuticle and locks the shape in place. It is the step most people skip and the one that makes the difference between a style that holds all day and one that collapses by lunchtime.

If your hair is fine, damaged or coloured, stay on the lower heat settings. The dryer's intelligent heat control measures air temperature continuously — 40 times a second on the HD07, over 100 times a second on the Travel dryer — but it cannot compensate for holding high heat on one section for too long.

Diffuser, smoothing nozzle or concentrator — which attachment for which hair?

Match the attachment to the shape you want, not to the dryer.

  • Diffuser — curls, coils and waves. It spreads the airflow so the hair dries without being blown out of its pattern, and the prongs lift the roots for volume. Cup the hair, hold it still, and use low speed. Our 6-inch Fabmira diffuser widens the bowl from 5.3 inches to 6 to cover more hair per pass.
  • Concentrator — precise direction. A narrow, flat outlet that keeps the airstream together over distance, so the air lands on the section you are working on instead of scattering.
  • Smoothing nozzle — a smooth finish on straight hair. The widest, flattest blade of air in the set. It smooths by direction rather than by heat: air moving down the shaft lays the cuticle flat, which is why technique matters more than temperature with this one.
  • Wide-tooth comb — detangling and lengthening. Mostly for textured hair, used on damp hair to detangle as it dries.

One warning worth repeating: a given attachment fits a given fitting. The Supersonic™ and Supersonic Nural™ share one attachment interface, and the Supersonic r™ (HD17/HD18) uses a different one. Check the model code on the handle before buying an attachment, because this is the single most common reason an accessory gets returned.

How often should I clean the filter, and how do I do it?

Once a month is the rule. Wipe debris from the outer filter cage and the inner filter mesh at the base of the handle with a soft, dry cloth.

It matters more than it sounds. The motor spins at up to 110,000 rpm and pulls its intake air through that mesh, so a clogged cage does not just reduce airflow — it makes the motor work against a restriction. The symptoms people notice first are the dryer feeling weaker than it used to, getting louder, or cutting out mid-dry.

Replace the outer cage when it is cracked, when the clips no longer hold, or when the mesh has deformed — usually the result of levering the old one off with a fingernail, or washing it and letting it dry out of shape. If you use the dryer daily on long hair, a replacement roughly once a year is not unreasonable. Our split-cage replacement fits over the cable, so you do not have to get it past a moulded plug.

Can I use my hair dryer abroad, or take it on a plane?

It depends which dryer you own, and this is the point where people damage their machines.

The full-size dryers are single-voltage. The HD07, HD16, HD17 and HD18 sold here are 120V and engineered for the country they were sold in. They cannot be used on 220–240V mains, and a travel adaptor does not change that — the adaptor changes the shape of the plug, not the voltage reaching the motor.

The Supersonic™ Travel dryer is universal. It adapts automatically to 100–240V, so it works in Tokyo, Paris and New York without a converter, and it is 32% smaller and 25% lighter than the original Supersonic. You may still need a plug adaptor, and Dyson recommends one rated to 1,300W across the full range. It also shares the Supersonic attachment fitting, so your existing nozzles travel with you.

Two smaller notes: above roughly 6,500 ft, reduced atmospheric pressure can affect performance, and the Travel dryer is built to go in a carry-on while a full-size dryer is best left at home.

Straightening and styling

What temperature should I straighten my hair at?

As low as the result allows, always. Heat damage is cumulative, and hair that has already been lightened or chemically treated has far less tolerance than virgin hair.

  • Fine, fragile, bleached or coloured hair: the lowest setting that works. Take smaller sections and make more passes rather than turning the heat up.
  • Medium and normal hair: mid-range, one pass per section.
  • Thick, coarse or very curly hair: the upper end of the range, but only after the hair is fully dry.

Never straighten damp hair with a plate straightener. Water trapped in the hair boils when it meets a hot plate, and that is what causes the sizzle and the split ends that follow. If your hair is still wet, dry it first — or use the Airstrait, which is designed to work on damp hair.

Can I use the Airstrait™ on dry hair?

Yes. Select Dry mode, pick the preset temperature for your hair type, and it will refresh a style between washes. Wet mode is a separate setting: three heat levels and two speeds, for straightening from damp.

What it will not do is act as a substitute for a flat iron on hair that is already dry and set. The no-heat-damage claim is specifically about wet-to-dry use, where the water still in the hair protects it. Use Dry mode to tidy up, not to run over the same section at maximum heat repeatedly.

My straightener is not gliding smoothly. What usually causes that?

In order of likelihood:

  • The sections are too thick. Take a section no wider than the plates. Hair that does not fit between them will not straighten, however many passes you make.
  • Product build-up on the plates. Styling product bakes onto the surface and starts to drag. Wipe the plates with a soft damp cloth once they are fully cool.
  • Too much product in the hair. Heavy oils and serums can make hot plates grab instead of glide.
  • The hair is not fully detangled. Work a comb through the section first.
  • Damaged ends. Rough, porous ends catch on the plates. A trim solves more than a temperature change.

On the Airstrait, the equivalent issue is usually the arms being held too tightly closed — the airflow needs to pass through the section to do its job. Let the hair sit in the channel rather than clamping it.

Products, parts and compatibility

Are the accessories on this site genuine Dyson parts?

Some are, some are not, and each accessory page states which. We sell both Dyson-manufactured machines and compatible third-party parts, and we label the compatible ones clearly at brand level: the Fabmira diffuser, the Chuancheng smoothing nozzle and the Kuflant/YouZu filter cage are all made by their own manufacturers, not by Dyson.

"Compatible" means the part is dimensioned to the same fitting and performs the same function. It does not mean it is a Dyson product, and it is not covered by Dyson's warranty. If you need a genuine part, check the brand field on the product page before ordering, or ask us and we will tell you what we have.

How do I know an attachment fits my dryer?

Find the model code printed on the handle and match it against the compatibility list on the product page. The range splits into three fittings:

  • Supersonic™ / Supersonic Nural™ — HD01, HD02, HD03, HD04, HD08, HD15 and HD16 share attachments. Note that the 6-inch diffuser excludes HD02 even within this group, so read the specific listing.
  • Supersonic r™ — HD17 and HD18. Different interface; Supersonic attachments do not fit, and Supersonic r™ attachments do not fit the older dryers.
  • Airwrap™ — its own attachment system entirely. Airwrap attachments are interchangeable across the Airwrap range, so barrels and brushes bought separately will clip onto an Origin handset.

If the code on your handle is not on the list, do not assume. Send us a photo of the label through the contact form and we will confirm.

What is the difference between the HD17 and the HD18 Professional?

The same machine, with three changes that only matter if you are using it behind a chair all day.

  • A 12.5 ft cord instead of 6.1 ft, so you can reach around a client without moving your station or hunting for an extension lead.
  • A spare inner filter in the box, so a clogged filter does not mean downtime mid-appointment.
  • A 325 g body with the weight pushed down into the plug, and a 79 dBa sound level against the HD17's 80.1 dBA.

It costs more, and the case for it only holds up on commercial use. For home use, the HD17 does the same job on a shorter cord.

Orders and support

How long does delivery take, and do you ship internationally?

We do. Every electrical tool is safety- and function-checked before it leaves the warehouse, and orders are verified, tested and dispatched within 1–3 business days, excluding weekends and regional holidays.

Carrier options range from standard postal air packets to premium commercial couriers, and we will quote custom logistics on request for larger or time-critical orders. Transit time after dispatch depends on the destination and the service you choose — the Shipping & Delivery page has the current breakdown. If you need something by a specific date, tell us before ordering rather than after.

What is your return and warranty policy?

Returns: we accept no-reason returns within 14 days of delivery. Orders can be cancelled at any time before they ship for a full refund. The product must come back unopened — please do not open the packaging film if you intend to return it.

Warranty: machines purchased through this store carry a 12-month manufacturer warranty covering manufacturing defects, and the Dyson dryers are additionally listed with a two-year warranty on the product page. Warranty service is available in a published list of countries and regions, and does not cover commercial use or normal wear on consumable parts such as filter cages.

To make a claim, use the warranty form and include your order number and a short description of the fault. The full terms are on the Refund & Returns Policy page.

Do you offer wholesale pricing or OEM/ODM for salons and brands?

Yes. Volume pricing is tiered on the product pages and applies automatically to signed-in trade accounts — pricing at the higher tiers is shown once you are signed in.

For OEM/ODM we handle specification, tooling, colour matching and packaging through our own supply chain, having spent four years on research, manufacturing and supply-chain control. If you are a salon chain buying in volume, or a brand looking for a manufacturing partner, the quickest route is the contact form with your target quantity, model and any branding requirements, and we will come back with pricing and lead time.
