Outer filter cage for Dyson Supersonic — the part that stops hair and dust reaching the motor

Every Supersonic pulls its intake air through a mesh cage at the base of the handle. That cage is the only thing standing between the motor and everything else in the room: dust, hair, lint, styling product. It is also, by design, a consumable — Dyson expects you to clean it and eventually replace it.

This is a compatible replacement for that part, in metallic grey. It is not a Dyson-manufactured item.

Why the filter matters more than it looks like it should

The Supersonic’s motor spins at up to 110,000 rpm. At that speed the intake is pulling hard, and a clogged cage does not just reduce airflow — it makes the motor work against a restriction. The symptoms people usually notice first are the dryer feeling weaker than it used to, getting louder, or cutting out mid-dry because it is overheating. All three are classic restricted-intake symptoms, and all three are cheaper to fix with a filter than with a repair.

If your cage is cracked, has lost clips, or has mesh pushed in from being cleaned too enthusiastically, replacing it restores the intake you paid for.

The point of the split design

The original cage is a closed ring, which means fitting a new one requires getting it past the power plug — either unplug the lead from the dryer or thread the whole cable through. On a moulded plug, neither is pleasant.

This one is split down the side with a clip. You open it, wrap it around the handle above the plug, close it, and rotate it into position. No tools, no disassembly, no wrestling a plug through a 1.03-inch opening. If you have ever given up halfway through fitting a filter, this is the design change that matters.

Which dryers it fits

Fits: Dyson Supersonic HD01, HD03, HD07, HD08.

Does not fit: HD02, and does not fit the Dyson Airwrap.

Check the model code on the handle before ordering. This is the single most common reason this part gets returned.

Fitting it

  1. Remove the old filter cage from the base of the handle.
  2. Open the new cage at the clip and pass the cable through the gap.
  3. Close the cage and fasten the bottom edge first.
  4. Fasten the top edge, then push the cage up into the handle.
  5. Rotate it until the seam and the clips align with the intake.

Once it is on, check it by hand: the cage should not rock or slide. Amazon’s own review summary reports that a share of buyers find this part does not stay clamped, so if yours moves, it is not seated — take it off and refit before the first use rather than after.

Who it suits

  • Dryers that feel weak or keep cutting out — a restricted intake is the first thing to rule out, and it is the cheapest.
  • Cracked or missing cages — usually the result of levering the old one off with a fingernail.
  • Anyone who cleans the filter with water — the mesh deforms over time, and a deformed cage no longer seats properly.
  • Owners of an HD01, HD03, HD07 or HD08 only — check the code first. This will not fit an HD02 or an Airwrap.
  • Buying a spare — at this price, keeping one in a drawer beats waiting for a replacement while the dryer is out of action.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to take the plug off to fit it?

No. That is the entire point of the split design — the cage opens, goes around the cable above the plug, and clips closed.

Will it fit an HD08?

Yes. HD01, HD03, HD07 and HD08 all use the same cage.

And an HD02?

No. HD02 is explicitly excluded by the manufacturer, as is the Airwrap.

Is this a genuine Dyson part?

No. It is a compatible part manufactured by YouZu and sold under the Kuflant brand. It is dimensioned to the same fit and made from ABS, but it is not made by Dyson.

How often should a filter be replaced?

Clean it monthly; replace it when it is cracked, the clips no longer hold, or the mesh is deformed. If the dryer is used daily on long hair, a replacement every year or so is not unreasonable.

Will it quieten the dryer?

Only if the old filter was blocked. A clean filter restores design airflow and design noise; it does not make the dryer quieter than new.

What buyers say

3.6 out of 5 from 86 ratings on Amazon: 54% five-star, but 20% one-star. That split is worth reading before you buy.

Amazon’s review summary reports that the cover works well and that one buyer found it resolved their Dyson switching off unexpectedly — while quality and value draw mixed views, with durability complaints about cracking after a few months and stability complaints about the cage not staying clamped. In short: it is a cheap part that does the job, and the outcomes depend on getting it seated properly and not over-tightening it.
