Supersonic, Supersonic r or Airwrap: Which Attachment Fits Your Dryer
An attachment is a small plastic part with no moving components, and it is responsible for more failed orders than any appliance on the site. Not because the parts are badly made, but because Dyson’s range has grown well past the model codes most people know, and the fitting changed along the way. This is a plain guide to which fitting is which, and what to check before you buy.
Why attachment compatibility is so confusing
The Dyson hair care range uses three separate attachment interfaces. They look similar in photographs and are not interchangeable.
1. Supersonic™ / Supersonic Nural™
This is the original magnetic fitting, and it covers the widest spread of model codes: HD01, HD02, HD03, HD04, HD08, HD15 and HD16. Attachments rotate 360° and hold magnetically, which is why they do not fall off mid-dry and why they come away without a twist.
One exception is worth flagging inside this group. The Fabmira 6-inch diffuser lists HD01/HD02/HD03/HD04/HD08/HD15/HD16 as compatible, but the smoothing nozzle for part 967715-01 is listed for HD01/HD02/HD03 only. Same family, different listing, different coverage — always read the specific product page rather than assuming the family rule applies.
2. Supersonic r™
The HD17 and HD18 Professional use their own interface. Nothing from the Supersonic family fits them, and nothing made for the r™ fits the older dryers. Since the whole point of the HD17 is its smaller body, Dyson redesigned the attachment system around it rather than carrying the old one forward.
3. Airwrap™
The Airwrap uses a third system entirely. Its attachments are interchangeable across the Airwrap range, so a barrel or brush bought separately will clip onto an Origin handset — that is one of the genuine advantages of the platform. They will not fit a dryer.
What to check before ordering
Find the model code printed on the handle of your dryer. It is usually on the underside or near the base, sometimes under the filter cage. Then match it against the compatibility list on the product page. If the code is not on the list, do not assume — send us a photo of the label through the contact form and we will confirm before you buy.
Model codes matter more than product names. “Dyson Supersonic” is used for several generations of machine, and “Supersonic r” is a different tool, not a variant.
Genuine, or compatible?
We sell both, and we label which is which. Some accessories are Dyson-manufactured. Others — the Fabmira diffuser, the Chuancheng smoothing nozzle, the Kuflant/YouZu filter cage — are made by their own manufacturers to fit Dyson machines.
“Compatible” means the part is dimensioned to the same fitting and performs the same function. It does not mean it is a Dyson product, and it is not covered by Dyson’s warranty. That is not a reason to avoid them — a compatible filter cage at a fraction of the price is a sensible purchase — but it is a reason to know what you are buying. Read the brand field on the product page.
Three parts people replace most often
The outer filter cage
This is a consumable, not a permanent fixture. It sits at the base of the handle and it is the only thing standing between the motor and every bit of dust, hair and lint in the room. It clogs, and eventually it deforms or cracks.
Our replacement is a split cage with a clip, which matters more than it sounds: the original is a closed ring, so fitting a new one means getting it past the power plug, either by unplugging the lead or threading the entire cable through. The split version opens, wraps around the cable above the plug, and clips closed. It fits HD01, HD03, HD07 and HD08 — and explicitly does not fit HD02 or the Airwrap.
Replace it when it is cracked, when the clips no longer hold, or when the mesh has deformed — usually from levering the old one off with a fingernail, or washing it and letting it dry out of shape.
The smoothing nozzle
The standard Supersonic is built to move a lot of air, which is exactly right on soaking wet hair and exactly wrong when you want a smooth finish, because an open airstream scatters hair and lifts the cuticle. The smoothing nozzle fixes that one problem: a flattened slot instead of a circle, so the airstream stays together over distance and arrives where you aimed it.
It is at its best on hair that is already around 80% dry. Use the bare dryer to get the bulk of the water out, then fit the nozzle for the finishing pass. Wipe the inside of the slot with a dry cloth periodically — product build-up inside the outlet disturbs the airstream and undoes the smoothing effect.
The diffuser
If you have curls, coils or waves, the diffuser is the attachment that decides whether you get defined curls or a cloud of frizz. It spreads and slows the airflow so hair dries without being blown out of its pattern, and the prongs lift roots for volume.
Our 6-inch diffuser widens the bowl from the standard 5.3 inches, which covers more hair per pass and means less heat exposure overall. Cup the hair, hold it still, use low speed, and let the air do the work rather than moving the tool around.
The short version
Check the model code on the handle. Match it to the fitting, not the product name. Read the brand field so you know whether you are buying a Dyson part or a compatible one. And if you are unsure, ask before you order — it takes a minute and saves a return.
All the accessories discussed here are listed under hair dryer accessories, and the FAQ has the fitting breakdown in short form.
